First meeting of the series "Per DIRE di NO": The language of violence
First meeting of the series "Per DIRE di NO": The language of violence
11/14/2024
"On 14 November 2024, RacMet ACADEMY hosted the first event of the series ""Per DIRE di NO"", an initiative promoted by Raccorderie Metalliche in collaboration with the Municipality of Marcaria and the “Filippo Martani” Municipal Library, marking the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
The evening, titled ""The Language of Violence"", featured the participation of psychologist and psychotherapist Alessandra Varvazzo, who provided a deep reflection on the crucial role that language plays in violent dynamics and abuse. The meeting highlighted how the habit of viewing language merely as a means to convey information, along with the increasingly scant attention we give to the words and verbal expressions of others, can conceal signs of violence and abuse.
The audience has been encouraged to take a moment to consider the inherent bond between language, violence, and power dynamics, emphasising how frequently violent language becomes normalised or overlooked, despite its significant effects on relationships. The theme of power being exercised through words has been attentively explored, showing that, in many cases, verbal expressions are a precursor to more overt forms of violence."

Alessandra Varvazzo - Psychologist and Psychotherapist
This evening, marking the day dedicated to addressing violence against women, the focus was primarily on language, as it is considered the initial form of violence. And then there was a discussion, not just about the words themselves, but also about how these words are conveyed and the associated behaviours, covering various strategies of manipulation, indoctrination, control, and ways to disengage. A first step towards exiting these toxic and destructive dynamics. Violence is not solely directed towards women but occurs at an individual level, as each person engages in an internal dialogue. This extends to relationships and families, encompassing the violence present online. In summary, when considering violence, it is viewed comprehensively; beginning with women but encompassing all forms of violence.
