The language of violence: First meeting of the Per DIRE di NO event series

Raccorderie Metalliche, in collaboration with the Municipality of Marcaria and the “Filippo Martani” Municipal Library, hosted an event entitled “The Language of Violence” to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. Led by psychologist and psychotherapist Alessandra Varvazzo, the event offered an in-depth reflection on the fundamental role that language plays in dynamics of violence and abuse. The discussion highlighted the importance of considering language not merely as a means of conveying information, but also of paying close attention to the choice of words and verbal expressions, as they may conceal signs of violence and abuse.

Tonight, on the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, I addressed this topic by focusing particularly on language, because I believe that language can be the first form of violence. We discussed not only the words themselves, but also the way in which they are expressed and the behaviours that accompany them. We looked at various strategies of manipulation, coercion and control, and at how people can break free from them—an essential first step towards escaping such toxic and destructive dynamics.

Violence does not concern women alone; it can also exist at an individual level, in the way each of us talks to ourselves, and can extend to relationships, families and the online world. When I think about violence, I consider it from every angle. So, while I start from violence against women, I am ultimately referring to all forms of violence.
